TIM ARTHUR EXHIBITION

Tim has a longstanding association with the Torch Theatre and we are pleased to welcome him back as our exhibiting artist at the Gallery for October.

Born in Devon in 1950, Tim trained as a teacher at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London specialising in set design and scenery construction. He found a ready market for his paintings exploiting the “Swinging London” scene, selling his lurid posters to American tourists from the railings at Hyde Park.

After leaving London 1971 he taught art and drama in Devon before moving to Pembrokeshire with his wife Cathy. He was appointed Youth Tutor at the Milford Haven Further Education Centre where he founded the Torch Youth Theatre in 1980 which continues to thrive to this day. Tim also served for many years on the Torch Board of Directors.

When Tim was commissioned by Maria Grimwood to create a Spanish feel at Picton Castle’s  Courtyard  Restaurant it rekindled his interest in painting. He was invited to show his work at Picton’s Courtyard Gallery and is now a regular exhibitor at the Waterfront Gallery, Milford Haven.

Most recently Tim’s work has been selected for the “Wales Contemporary” – a prestigious international exhibition currently at the Waterfront which transfers to London’s OXO Gallery in 2023.

Tim has developed an eye for off-beat subjects and locations, in particular Pembrokeshire’s boatyards and docks. Another passion is to paint the volcanic landscape of Lanzarote – and the spectacular spoon-shaped prows of Canarian Atlantic trawlers.

Asked about his art Tim said “The main subjects in my paintings need to stand out, catch the eye and have exciting colours.  I try to evoke on canvas the stimulation of a view that I have studied. Sometimes it works!”

To view Tim’s artwork the Torch Theatre’s Oriel Joanna Field Gallery is open 10.00am to 8.00pm Monday to Saturday and 1 hour prior to the start of events on Sundays until 8:00pm.
