Snow White – a review by Liam Dearden, a regular reviewer for the Torch Theatre

Disney's live-action rendition of Snow White emerges as a captivating fairy tale for our time, revitalising the beloved 1937 classic with a richer narrative that maintains the original's timeless charm. This adaptation is one of Disneys finest recent live-action projects, enhanced by stunning visuals, intricate character development, and captivating original musical numbers.

At the films heart is Rachel Zegler, whose portrayal of Snow White is filled with charm and vocal brilliance. She embodies messages of compassion, friendship, and hope, particularly showcased in her stirring rendition of "Waiting on a Wish." In contrast, Gal Gadot captivates as the Evil Queen, exuding fierce elegance and embodying a woman consumed by vanity and greed. The nuanced conflict between these formidable women illustrates the tale of kindness versus greed, with Snow White seeking to uplift her people while the Evil Queen's quest for beauty leads to her downfall.

Andrew Burnap shines as Jonathan, while the reimagined dwarfs add warmth and humour, especially through Snow Whites bond with Dopey. Director Marc Webb creates a visually enchanting experience, featuring original songs by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, alongside classic tunes like "Heigh-Ho."

The screenplay provides depth to Snow Whites character, emphasizing her aspiration to honour her late father's legacy. This live-action adaptation transports audiences through Disney's rich storytelling, with elements like the poisoned apple and magic mirror inviting introspection.

The costumes are a visual feast, showcasing detailed designs that evoke the essence of the animated classic. This enchanting retelling reaffirms that, even after 88 years, the allure of Snow White remains undiminished, capturing the hearts of both young and old. Take a bite—this story is indeed the fairest of them all.
