A Giant-Sized Helping of Festive Fun

Our regular contributor Liam Dearden attended the first readthrough of Jack and the Beanstalk. Here's what he had to say...

If you're searching for a giant-sized helping of festive fun this holiday season, look no further than The Torch Theatre's upcoming Christmas Pantomime, “Jack and the Beanstalk” brilliantly Written and directed by Artistic Director Chelsey Gillard, this delightful production is set to offer audiences an uproarious adventure on an epic scale that’ll have everyone laughing their socks off—from the littlest sprouts to the biggest potatoes.

I had the absolute pleasure of attending the first read-through/rehearsal of this compelling tale, and let me tell you, the excitement was palpable! The cast, brimming with local talent, includes Samuel Freeman as the mischievous Terrence Fleshcreep, the ever-lovable Dame Titania Trott portrayed by Lloyd Grayshon, and the cunning Agatha Fleshcreep brought to life by Freya Dare. All three are no strangers to the Torch stage, having shone brightly in last year’s record-breaking panto, Beauty and the Beast.

Adding to the delightful mix is Pat, the cow who certainly stole the show, played with heart and flair by Carri Munn. Gareth Elis truly makes his Torch debut as the brave hero, Jack Trott, who resides on Trott's Tater Farm alongside his mum and their cherished cow, and Elena Carys-Thomas plays Fairy Gabby Greenfingers, Get ready for a bountiful harvest of veggie and moo-tastic puns!. audience's are in for a Pembrokeshire-inspired adventure, with cheeky nods to local landmarks from Carew Car Boot Sale to Castle Pill!

What struck me during the read-through—and aligns with fellow reviewer Val Ruloff—is that this production promises to be an un-bean-livable spectacle. The journey high above the clouds into the Giant's castle, takes the experience to new whimsical heights.

The vibrant costumes, from Jack to the fashionable Dame Trott, blend fairy tale cosiness with the thrill of adventure. Kevin Jenkins promises an energetic experience in Cloudland, with scenes full of rainbows, sparkles, plenty of beans and larger-than-life characters. It's set to be a thrilling climb of pure entertainment. Complemented by original music from James Williams, the performances during the read-through were nothing short of outstanding, as each actor infused their characters with a unique charm that left me wishing for more.

Chelsey Gillard's script is an absolute Udder Delight, masterfully blending comedy, environmental themes, and family heroics, evoking laughter, tears, and cheers. Its a 24-carrot experience full of giggles and hearty laughs, all set in an enchanting and effervescent atmosphere.

So, don’t hesitate—climb aboard the beanstalk and bring your little and big hummus along for a giant-sized adventure! This panto adventure will leave you with smiles on your faces and hearts full of belief in magic, long after the curtain falls. You can be sure there is no cabbage-patching about the fun this production has in store!
