3 writers + 3 plays = 5 actors + 9 characters!
This April, the Torch Theatre welcomes actors Siôn Emyr, Mali O'Donnell, Mark Henry-Davies, Elena Carys-Thomas and Gareth John Bale to its stage for three Welsh language plays. The plays are the fruits of labour of ‘Sgen ti Syniad, a platform for old and new talents here in Wales and are a must see.
On Wednesday 9 April, audience members can see Wisgi by Carwyn Blayney, Dishgled ‘da Del by Cai Llewelyn Evans and 99’er by Pembrokeshire born Ceri Ashe (a familiar face here at the Torch Theatre having played the Evil Fairy Shadowmist in the 2023 pantomime of Beauty and the Beast).
The Torch Theatre is also excited to be welcoming Gareth John Bale to its stage, the face of Grav, the remarkable one-man show exploring the life and times of one of Wales’ most loved sons, Ray Gravell. Gareth will not only be acting in one of the dramas, he’s also directing one of them.
Wisgi by comedian, actor and writer Carwyn Blayney sees Gwion facing a difficult life – alone. Since breaking up with his girlfriend, Wini, Gwion realises that he cannot afford to live by himself. Thankfully, his old friend, Iwan, needs a place to stay. But are things really over between Gwion and Wini? This is a comedy about three selfish people fighting over accommodation during the cost-of-living crisis.
The second drama of the evening is Dishgled ‘da Del by Cai Llewelyn Evans, a finalist in So You Think You’re Funny, he took second place in the 2023 Max Turner Award. The charismatic shock jock Del Tozer excites her devoted listeners daily on TARAN FM with her savage comments on modern life. But when a young guest with an alternative perspective on the world and the sins of the past enters the studio, is there a danger that Del's own history will be put under the spotlight?
And finally, the greatly anticipated 99’er by Ceri Ashe. When Elen's father dies suddenly, she jumps on the next train from London back to Pembrokeshire and finds herself working in the family’s ice-cream shop: "When you're young and imagine being thirty, you think, wow, everything will be sorted - a house, a job, no overdraft.... blink - and bam, it's your thirties and not much has changed!”
The Welsh language performances will be touring Wales during March and April and English precis will be available for audience members.
