Alec Lewis: ‘The Painted Word’ (2020)
This exhibition reflects my interest in the written word – whether it’s in music, poetry, myth or legend; and the people who have influenced my life. William Blake, Oscar Wilde and of course Dylan Thomas who inspires me by consistently discovering something new in his writings.
Music has always been part of my life and in this exhibition I have all my heroes. Bowie, Hendrix, Dylan and the master of the written word – Leonard Cohen.
I have also included other icons of the 20th century – Richard Burton, Marilyn Monroe and Elvis – tortured souls but still icons today.
Being influenced by the work of Kurt Schwitters I make my pictures using anything I can find. Bits of wrapping paper, pieces of cardboard, used tickets, whatever that works to complete ‘The Painted Word’.
