A new full length ballet for 2017 with a new score by brilliant Welsh harpist, composer and recording artist Catrin Finch in collaboration with The Riverfront Theatre in Newport, The Light Princess is the lightest and brightest dance event of the year and is visiting the Torch Theatre Milford Haven! This wonderful performance can be seen on Wednesday, 21 June at 7.30pm.
Using elements of circus and outstanding classical choreography the story draws inspiration from Sleeping Beauty, telling the story of a princess afflicted by a constant weightlessness, unable to get her feet on the ground, until she finds a love that brings her down to earth.
Featuring ground breaking video projections and stunningly vibrant costumes The Light Princess will transport you to a world of laughter, beauty and wonder.
“The story of The Light Princess is a combination of charming and witty with dark and sinister and while the story has a happy ending in my twisted little brain I quite liked the penultimate scene when the love-struck prince made the ultimate sacrifice to save the planet – oops, his Light Princess,” said Mike Smith, in his Arts Scene Wales review.
He added: “Add to this magical lighting designs from Chris Illingsworth, costume, elegant set and video designs by the work’s choreographers Darius James and Amy Doughty, and that Catrin Finch score for a show that has instant appeal. In this work Catrin collaborates with composer and music producer Lee House with some scintillating results.”
George MacDonald’s quirky and timeless tale takes on a new life, interpreted in dance by some of the finest dancers in the world with the young Ballet Cymru, a vital group of dancers who are pushing back the barriers of classical ballet.
The company challenges its dancers to interpret some of the finest characters in literature and continues to develop its relationship with audiences through accessible outreach work and exceptional, stylish performances.
This production will be supported by live audio description for blind and visually impaired patrons. There will also be a pre-show Touch Tour, (6:30pm-7:00pm) led by the audio describer, offering invaluable insight into the world of Ballet Cymru’s Light Princess. Those participating will be met in our Front of House area and taken on to the stage where they will learn more about the costumes, set and characters of the show.
