Haverfordwest Operatic Society presents “HMS PINAFORE”Categoriau:
Haverfordwest Operatic Society welcomes you on board the HMS Pinafore “if you please”.
“Things are seldom what they seem” in Gilbert and Sullivan’s first blockbuster hit “HMS Pinafore”, or “The Lass That Loved a Sailor.”
Dealing with the age-old conundrum of love between social classes, HMS Pinafore has infectious tunes and a beautifully constructed liberetto.
At Portsmouth Harbour, the Sailors and WRNs gather on ship following the proud return of the Armed Forces from the Falklands Conflict. There is much well-earned fun had by all while watching the dilemma unfolding on board.
The Captain’s daughter, Josephine, despit her privlidged position, falls in love with a lower-class sailor, Ralph instead of her father’s choice; the First Lord of the Admiralty, Sir Joseph Porter. He is accompanied by his relatives who join him and members of the crew in singing such songs as “Gaily Tripping” and “When I was a Lad”.
The comedy unfolds with Little Buttercup finally divulging a few of her best kept secrets.
There is a final proclamation by all that Ralph is indeed, “An Englishman!”
All ends wih “Joy and rapture unforseen.”
Hip, Hip, Hooray!
